A Voice for the Disabled People of India

Aamir  Khan  is  a  popular  Bollywood  actor. He has made  several  films on  social  issues. These  days  he  is  hosting  a  TV  programme called Satyamev Jayate in  which   he  takes up  various  social  evils and  mal practises  rampant  in  our  society, issues like the  killing  of  the  the  female  child, brides  being  killed  for  dowry, violence against   women and  child  abuse. He  has also  given  a  voice  to  millions  of   disabled  people  in India. today   Today,  he  was  invited  to  the  upper  house  of  the  Parliament  to  talk  about  medical   mal practises. He wrote  the  following  article   for  a  leading  Indian  newspaper.

One  simple  step  to  increase  our GDP
by  Aamir Khan

In America, 12 per cent of the population is counted as disabled, the corresponding percentage in England is 18 and in Germany, nine. In India, government statistics claim it is two per cent. Javed Abidi of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People has a very poignant question with regard to the above numbers: what is so amazing about the Indian environment or climate or gene pool that we have only a tenth or a fifth of the number of persons with disabilities when compared to other countries? Or is it that something is wrong with our counting?

Until the year 2000 — 53 years after Independence — the Census did not record a single disabled person in India! In other words, in the minds of the people making policy, taking decisions and allocating funds, the disabled did not exist. And if they did not exist, obviously we did not do much for them. So in the first 53 years of Independence, while we were building the infrastructure of our country, we did little or nothing to include them in our thoughts and actions. Therefore, the bulk of our infrastructure is not disabled-friendly, leaving them further marginalised, and disabling them further.

How we behave with the disabled among us tells us what kind of a people we are.

Ketan Kothari, another expert, explains how, by and large, we have two kinds of reactions to disabled people: one, that they must have done something wrong in their previous birth and therefore deserve what they got; two, let us use them as a ticket to heaven — make a donation to an organisation working for the disabled, or give money to a disabled person asking for alms, and score some brownie points with God. If this is how many of us behave towards the disabled, it is a sorry picture that we paint of ourselves.

Time to change, guys.

So where and how should this change begin? Education.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme and the Right to Education Act say that every child in India is guaranteed an education. Despite that, most regular schools in India deny admission to children with disabilities. They cite lack of infrastructure and trained special educators. They are probably right. But what stops so many schools across India from becoming inclusive and disabled-friendly? Who is putting a gun to their heads, not allowing them to do this? I'm afraid it is our own lack of thought, application of mind, and maybe of heart. Let's change that. If we start today, each school (if it really wants to) can become a truly integrated school within a period of two, or at most three, years. Let each school make this its target.

Currently, an alarmingly low percentage of children with disabilities are educated. Without the foundation of a strong education, no child can reach his or her potential in life. By denying children with disabilities admission in regular schools, we are denying them their right to education and, therefore, their right to make their lives productive. We are also denying other children the right to intermingle with, learn from, and grow up with friends with disabilities, and vice versa. With education for our persons with disabilities, we can prepare them to be productive, look after themselves, and their families.

The government says two per cent of our population is disabled. Various experts and NGOs say it is six per cent. I think it is safe to assume that the number is somewhere between six and 10 per cent — let's say eight. Now eight per cent of 1.2 billion is 96 million. That is more than the population of England (51 million), France (65 million) and Germany (80 million). As Mr. Abidi puts it, what we as society need to decide is, do we want 96 million of our population to be uneducated, unemployed, unproductive and left with no choice but to be a weight that the rest of us carry? Or do we want them to be educated, employed, productive, able to look after themselves and their families, contributing to the growth and wealth of our nation? If we want the latter then we simply cannot achieve that without including them in our mainstream education system.

That's the bottom line.

How Prableen Survived the Utoeya Killings

There  were  two  teenagers  of  Indian  origin on Utoeya  Island  where  the  terrible   carnage  took  place. Both  of  them  miraculously  survived  the  attack'

A  weaver  from  Varanasi  revealed that  in 2008 ,  Anders  (the  shooter)  had  ordered  badges from  his  workshop. The  badges  were  meant  for  his  uniform. The  weaver   and  his   family  are  shocked  and  stunned  to  hear about  the  evil  acts  of  Anders. It  was  the  last  job  they  did, not  they  are  into  power  looms.

These stories  appeared  in the  Hindustan Times  newspaper.

Grief,  tragedy,  loss, even  violence  unites   people  of   distant  lands  together. One  or  two  Swedish  nations  were  killed in  a  train  accident  a few  weeks  ago in our state.

The  people  of  Norway  have   diplayed immeasurable  courage  and   fortitude while  dealing   with  a  catastrophe  of  such  magnitude. Someone  said  in Norway  one  doesn 't   see  heavy  policing. The  citizens  are  so  law  abiding  and   peaceful.

But  there  is  hope   for   all  of   us.  Hope,  if  we  turn  towards  our  Creator. And  look towards Him  for   comfort,  strength  and  protection. I live  in  an  unstable  society.  I  need  it  24/7. Read  about   the  lives  of  minorities (  like  Christians) and  others  in this  article  A NEW  LAW   FOR  AN  OLD  PROBLEM

And  this  is  Prableen 's  story

When the gun fell silent on Norway's Utoeya island, Prableen Kaur, an 18-year-old, found herself lying on top of a dead body in the woods, with two more bodies piled on top of her. She had lay like that for an hour. Minutes earlier, as she played dead, trying not to breath, her mobile phone had rung. The killer, right-wing fanatic Anders Behring Breivik, lurked nearby, stalking his innocent young victims, 93 of whom died.

Now Prableen’s blog about Friday’s massacre has become an Internet sensation. “I had a guardian angel,” writes Prableen, vice chairperson of the Oslo division the Norwegian Labour Party’s youth wing. Hundreds have posted messages comforting her.

On Sunday, Prableen and her family — father Malkeet Singh, a cab driver from Patiala, mother, brother and sister — offered prayers at the local Gurdwara in Oslo. The teenager is at home now, recovering from the nightmare, her father told HT.

In a country that is home to some 5,000 Sikhs, a second Indian-origin teenager, Pratap Singh, 15, also survived the massacre.

When a bomb exploded at the Labour party office in Oslo, killing seven people, Prableen wrote in her blog, “We comforted one another that we were safe on an island. No-one knew that hell would break out among us as well.”

Then shots ran out in Utoeya. “I saw him shoot. Everyone began to run. The first thought was, ‘Why is the police shooting at us? What the hell?!’”

The teenagers ran into a room as Breivik continued to shoot and jumped out of a window. She spotted her best friend through the window but couldn’t get to him. She “saw the fear in his eyes.”

They ran into the woods, stopping only to help the injured as they made their way down to the lake Tyrifjorden that surrounds the island, 40 km from Oslo. Crouching behind a brick wall along with others, she prayed, cried and called her family and friends from her mobile phone.

“A man came. ‘I am from the police’.” Someone shouted back that he had to prove it, and the killer started to shoot. “He reloaded. Shot more. He shot those around me. I remained lying. I thought: ‘Now it is over. He is here.”
Prableen lay there for an hour, buried under dead bodies.

Then she ran for the lake and, tearing off her jumper, began to swim, heading for a rubber boat several children were clinging on to.
She became so tired she turned on her back, using only her feet to paddle.

Rescued by police, the children were taken to a hotel, where she was reunited with her best friend.
“I don’t manage to sleep any more,” Prableen writes.

India 's longest Lunar Eclipse - June 2011

"The  moon  was  a  ghostly  galleon tossed  upon  cloudy  skies" those  words  by   Alfred Noyes came  to  mind as  I    beheld  the  fascinating  heavenly drama last  night. It  was  the  longest and darkest  moonlit  night when the  earth stood  between   the  sun and  moon . The  ellipse lasted 100  minutes starting  at  11.53 pm on June 15th,  most  of  it  happened after  midnight  on June  16th.

All  the news  channels  were  abuzz with  the  ellipse  story specially  the  Hindi  channels. In  India  the English  and Hindi  news  channels treat news  stories  differently. The  Hindi  ones   lean  towards  sensationalism   some  of  them  targeting a  semi literate ,  traditional audience ( at  least  that' s  what  I  think)  and  the  English  news  channels  are   for  more  sophisticated  and  Westernized viewers. I jump channels  whenever  I   find  an interesting  story. But  I  must    add some  Hindi channels feature  excellent  programs with India' s  top  journalists,  analysts  and  news reporters. I  don 't   want  to  appear  biased  against  them.

The  discussions  on TV  followed  2  streams  or  angles.
One  group  of  people  viewed  the  ellipse   as a natural  phenomenon and made  rational scientific  comments  about  it. They were scientists,  star gazers  astronomers and   lay folk  among  them.
The other group  consisted  of  Hindu  priests,  astrologers, horoscope readers and  suchlike  who  were  cautioning     viewers  against  the  calamities  that  might  befall  them  if  they  don 't   fulfill  certain religious   obligations    and  rituals. They were  bent  upon  invoking  fear and  apprehension. The  clash  of opinions  was very vociferous and  ear-splitting  on one  frequency. It  was  quite  amusing -  maybe  they  were staging  it  to  increase their  ratings. But  all  serious  and  responsible  news  anchors  were telling  people  not  to  be  fearful  of this  natural  occurrence and  fulfil  their  religious practises at  the  same  time. Sort  of  the  middle  path.
Many  people fasted, made offerings at  temples (whose  doors  were shut during  the  eclipse) and took
baths  in    holy  rivers in  order  to  appease  the  gods and  for  good luck.

My  heart  was  full  of  worship  and  wonder  for  the  living  God  ,  our  Creator. He  is  the  one  who  rules  us   and  not  the  network of  stars which  He  has  flung  out  in  space.

"The  heavens declare  the  glory  of  God and  the  firmament  showeth  His  handiwork" BIBLE Psalm 19:1

I  took   a  few  photos  with   my  Sony Cybershot at  various  stages  of   the  eclipse. I  like  the reddish bronze  glow  in  the  last  pictures.

"Space  is   the stature  of  God",  so  said  Joseph   Jourbert. How  right  he  was

Sunday Blessing ; Life Comes Daily

Clouds dotting the sky

I draw tremendous inspiration from Joni Earekson Tada"s daily devotional More Precious Than Silver. Today after battling against the travesties of nature and the ' system ' in which i live I receive strength and hope from Deut 33 ;25

Life Is So Daily

Your strength will equal your days. -- Deuteronomy 33:25

Have you ever thought of your days as so... daily? The minute you open your eyes in the morning you can feel yourself shifting into routine. Turn off alarm. Fling back covers. Put feet in slippers. Turn on shower. Squeeze toothpaste on brush while shower heats up. Like I said: It's so daily. That's especially true for me. I wake up every morning to the exact same series of events. A friend comes into the bedroom, turns on the tap to warm the water, heads for the kitchen and pours coffee, comes back and puts the coffee straw in my mouth and begins to put my legs through their range-of-motion exercise routine. After that, it's a bath, get dressed, and be lifted into my wheelchair. Some daysI wish the routine could vary, but like you, I must accept the dailyness. My friend Shirley Locker, who is also disabled, once reminded me that our dailychallenges have rewards for those who trust God for hour-by-hour (sometimes minute-by-minute)strength. God promises, "Your strength will equal your days."No matter how deep the rut of your daily routine, satisfaction in the Lord Jesus can be deeper still. In fact, God invites us to know His satisfaction on a more profound level as we remind ourselves to go to him for grace, especially during those so-called boring hours when we feel our life is on automatic. He knows that's when we need him most.No matter how much the "same" your day appears, God's grace will make it different because his grace is fresh every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us his love and compassion are new every morning. What a relief.

What parts of your day are routine? Why not infuse them with life by inviting God to be a part of them? Memorize Scripture during your bathroom routines, and pray while you're dressing.* * * * *

Thank You, Lord, that Your strength and grace are daily -- not that they're routine, but that they're consistently available. Every day. Every hour. Every moment. Help me to draw on them today.~
Blessings,

Lone Star

The result of the yesterday' s downpour was that we lost our power supply for 4 hours. Totalling to 7 hours. And no water too.
7 am Sunday morning - we were just about getting the grip of the day when the electricity went off . This time for 9 hours. We couldn 't pump any water too. All this was so stressful. We filled up our buckets with the govt. supply water as quickly as we could.
The church and Parsonage was without electricity and water for about 24 hours. My mom was so concerned she was asking Jags to fetch water for our Pastor from across the street, but Pastor reassured her saying they had an emergency supply. In India you have to have an emergency supply of everything. We could survive a nuclear flash LOL!
Church was very hot and humid and most part of the day it remained like this. It takes a heavy toll on the mind and body, trying to cope.
My left leg is still very painful after the fall. I am taking painkillers, they 've have not helped much and I have run out of them. .
I am leaning very heavily on the promise from Deut 33 ;25
YOUR STRENGTH WILL EQUAL YOUR DAYS

There are many topics about daily life in India and current issues facing my nation which I would like to write about .Things which pierce my heart and I would like to share so that my international friends can be aware of them and pray for my country. Tell me if you are interested. My blog is pretty eclectic. I don 't stick to one particular genre. I like it this way.

Promise Keepers

They rolled in over the heavens like a maurading pack of dark horses
Our first black dangerous looking monsoon clouds
I thought they would not keep their promise
So I planned to go out
But I was stopped by a heavy down pour.
The dry earth drank to its fullest
And the plants performed a wind ballet.
Thank you for keeping your promise.
How wonderful is our God who sent us rain in due time.

But just as it started to rain our power went off and we got it after 4 hours. So the whole evening was a dud. Ha-ha!

Every night I give Sheeba 's left over food to the neighbour 's (wild) dog. Tonight as I stepped out in the dark I tripped over some pebbles and had a bad fall. I could not get up on my own. I called Jags (church helper) for help and he asisted me to get uo. My darling Sheeba tried to help by licking my face and wagging her tail and when Naughty (the wild dog) came near me, she chased him away ferociously.
I was in a lot of pain but I down played it as I did not want to alarm Mama. Having her upset would be worse. I took a pain killer so I am better now. At least the temps come down a bit.

There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. -John Ruskin

Earth Hour - This Little light of Mine

Today is being marked as Earth Day in 125 countries all over the globe and people are being asked to switch off their lights etc between 8.30 and 9.30 pm local time. There is a huge media campaign going on in India. And I do appreciate the efforts of people trying to reduce their carbon imprint and conserve energy.
But if you look at the other side of the coin or globe then you will find that in India and other less developed countries we are natural conservators of energy and resources and these green shenanigans are passe for us.
We are already facing severe power shortages. Everyday we have power outage lasting 3 to 4 hours maybe more. The voltage is so bad that our household appliances are affected. With voltage fluctuation my fridge makes such a horrible noise, one would think there are a dozen rattle snakes living inside it. My microwave oven blew out in Jan. I have not been able to get it fixed.

Horrible as it may sound but we are natural conservators due to power, water and food shortages , unequal distribution of wealth and technology and illiteracy.
The area where my sister Namrita lives (Meghalaya) is facing severe drought. They get a meagre water supply for half an hour morning and evening. Even doing her laundry is a struggle.
I don 't need my newspaper to tell me that in India people are not dying of starvation they are living in it.
What we need is to educate people to conserve forests, manage garbage disposal and industrial waste, and harvest wind and solar energy. Work is being done in these areas but it is just a drop in the ocean. I would like to see solar powered appliances made available to us.
You can read about Earth Day HERE
So I am not switching off my little bulb. And if I could I would watch
this video as it has no stars in it.
I have not played safe in this post. Go on flail me.

Know Yer (Noah 's) Ark

I got this amazing story from my friend SITA

Man Builds Noah's Ark (exact scale given in Bible).
Working Replica of Noah's Ark Opened In SCHAGEN, Netherlands.
The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was opened the first crowd of curious townsfolk to behold the wonder.
Of course, it's only a replica of the Biblical Ark , built by Dutch Creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.

The ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.
Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold.
A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine. Biblical Scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been.
Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and with occasional help from his son Roy. Construction began in May 2005. On the uncovered top - deck not quite ready in time for the opening - will come a petting zoo, with baby lambs and chickens, and goats, and one camel.
Visitors on the first day were stunned. "It's past comprehension", said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw the ark looming over the local landscape.
"I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big." There is enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater where kids can watch a video that tells the story of Noah and his ark. Huibers, a Christian man, said he hopes the project will renew interest in Christianity in the Netherlands, where church going has fallen dramatically in the past 50 years.

If you are visiting the Netherlands keep this on your MUST SEE list.

In India many people have built small sized Taj Mahals. If fact a man has built a life size Taj Mahal in Bangla Desh using the same kind of marble and materials India is not pleased about it. You simply must not duplicate an existing national monument which is a tourist attraction and a world heritage site.

BTW in Dehra Doon, the capital of Uttrakhand state there is a hotel called The White House, but it does not look like "the" White House. And one can safely brag and say,"Oh I was a guest at The White House. And I wasn 't gate crashing."

This got me thinking. Which Biblical site would I like to reconstruct if I had the means and expertise?

A garden would be my choice. Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane -Prayer Garden. And 6 years ago I claimed a promise from God to make my church and campus like a flourishing land pictured in Ezekiel 36.

In Central India, (outside Hyderabad) a Christian man who is a retired geologist has constructed a replica of the Old Testament Tabernacle , but not to scale, or building material .It is a concrete structure. Its used as a church . He plans on building a Noah ' s Ark too. They get many visitors throughout the year.

I think its a very good way of evangelism in a place where visual experience makes a strong impact.

There is one Biblical structure each Christian is a part of.

THE CHURCH , THE BODY OF CHRIST.

I am just wondering which Biblical site or building would you re-construct if you could? Any ideas?

Awake to Sleep

Hello friends today is a good opportunity to catch up on some sleep, you have a good excuse to give to the boss if they catch you taking forty winks at work, because
its World Sleep Day.This is what I got from the web.
WORLD SLEEP DAY 2010 -- MARCH 19, 2010
World Sleep Day is an international annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, social aspects and driving. It aims to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better prevention and management of sleep disorders. World Sleep Day 2010 is being held on March 19th, under the slogan "Sleep Well, Stay Healthy".
This marks the third World Sleep Day event organized by the World Association of Sleep Medicine. This year's event involves the organization of local groups promoting sleep health, presentation of educational materials, a competition of best productions celebrating World Sleep Day, and exhibition of historic videos.
The World Sleep Day declaration is as follows:
Whereas, sleepiness and sleeplessness constitute a global epidemic that threatens health and quality of life,
Whereas, much can be done to prevent and treat sleepiness and sleeplessness,
Whereas, professional and public awareness are the firsts steps to action,
We hereby DECLARE that the disorders of sleep are preventable and treatable medical conditions in every country of the world.

Psalm 4 ;8 says
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety
Many nights I am unable to sleep due to worrisome thoughts or even tiring activity,or
a rush of Adrelin also prevents me from falling asleep. I avoid taking pill s and read till I drop off. Sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night I try to pray for prayer requests that come to mind.
What do you do when sleep doesn 't come?Sheeba thanks everyone who sent her good wishes

While the neighbour 's pooch runs around in circles.
Trying to eat his tail LOL
I found this photo of mules or khachchars
on the Internet.
They are hard working animals,
beasts of burden..
Here they are carrying gravel in Haridwar (Uttrakhand -North India)
Some years ago they were used by city laundry men or dhobis
to carry loads of washing.
Now they have been banned from cities
One can find them in rural pockets.
They look so patient,
ready to fall off to sleep.

Now I am leaving for our church Friday prayer meeting.
See you when I return
PRAYER REQUEST
Please pray for my brother in law Prem and sister Anju
they are going through a difficult time
due the world economic crisis.
May the Lord part the waters for them.
Their faith is strong and
they are standing on the promises of God.
